About Me
Stoney Conley is a painter who has received several grants and awards
including; The Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Grant for Painting 1978,
National Endowment for the Arts, Individual Artist Grant 1980, the Fulbright
Grant for Independent Study in Italy 1981, and a Fellowship to The Ballinglen
Arts Foundation, Balleycastle, County Mayo, Ireland 1995.
For the last two decades he has been painting, and making collages,
inspired by Maine. These island images of light reflected on water, sky and
land capture the natural world. The beaches, coves and forested coast
caught in his images reflect a sense of place. In the late seventies and
eighties he painted in fresco making murals and smaller portable panels.
He learned fresco at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in
Maine where he later taught it for a few summers.
Conley is an Associate Professor of Practice in Art at Boston College, and
was the Curator of the Boston College McMullen Museum of Art from 1988 to
2005. He received a BFA From Tufts University in 1976, and from the School
of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston he received a Diploma in 1973 and a
Graduate Studies Diploma 1974, for which he received the the Clarissa Barlett
Traveling Fellowship.
He has been a Visiting Faculty at; Smith College, Rhode Island School
Design, Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and Parsons School Of
Design as well as Visiting Lecturer at; Mt. Holyoke College, Tufts University,
Virginia Tech and The University of New Hampshire.
He has exhibited widely in Boston and New England. He is in many public
and private collections including; The Boston Federal Reserve Bank, The
Rose Art Museum at Brandies University, Tufts University, The McMullen
Museum at Boston College, The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art at the
University of Florida, Fidelity Investments, Jenner and Block Associates in
Chicago, Fidelity Bank of Baltimore, and others.
As Curator he has organized several exhibitions at Boston College including;
Sculpture On the Wall (1987), Artists and Writers: Sculpture by Michael de
Lisio (1988), Wood Transformed (1990), Jack Tworkov, 1935-1982: An
Abstract Expressionist Inventing Form (1994), Fresco: A Contemporary
Perspective (1994), Inspired by Nature: A Contemporary View (1995), John
Moore: Urban Visions (1995), House: Charged Space (2001), Refigured
(2004), Sarah Westlake: Drawing <-> Sculpture (2004 with Mary Armstrong)
(2004). He was the lead curator collaborating with other faculty on the
exhibitions Original Visions: Shifting The Paradigm, Women’s Art 1970-1996
(1997), Re/Dressing Cathleen: Contemporary Works by Irish Women Artists
(1997), and Eire/Land (2003).
